August 2022 Engineering update

Thanks to our community’s investment in making Gun.io better, we’ve been able to chase down several usability improvements (proposed by you all!) this month.

Like most of you, we surface some of our best ideas from conversations with our user base. After seeing some suggestions pop up in Cantina, you might see a message that says “really good idea, thanks for bringing it to our attention.” We really mean it—it’s how we build our roadmap. Here’s the incremental progress we’ve made on those requests this month:

Technical consult scheduling

In the interest of reducing hurdles to getting clients and talent on the same page, we’ve introduced a Calendly integration. This makes it easier for clients to schedule technical consultations, working with one of the most widely used scheduling tools around.

Updated internal talent tracking tools

We’ve come a long way since the early days of Gun.io, when Teja and Rich were more or less just trying to find jobs for a small pool of talented friends (more on that in the upcoming new season of the Frontier Podcast). Now that we are hovering around the 25,000 mark for developer sign-ups, there’s a lot more data to keep track of.

This month our Engineering team added a handful of features to our already robust internal tools that help us to keep track of important information regarding talent. The features also make it easier to find the most relevant job matching info right up front, so our Talent Advocates can find the best matches for the gig quickly and easily.

Improvements to usability on the site

As a recovering front-end developer, nothing makes my heart sing louder than a site that is well-designed, easy to use, and accessible. So while the changes to navigation focus, URL structure, and our FAQs may seem small, we know the impact they have is much larger than they’re letting on.

Improve feedback timelines

One of the things we keep hearing from our talent is that they’d like more transparency in where they sit in the process of an application. And that’s totally reasonable, because who wants to hover in the ether, especially when it comes to employment? So while we don’t necessarily have control over the timelines our clients work on, we’ve now set up alerts to let us know when deals are stalling so we can keep applicants in the loop better, even if a client hasn’t reached a decision.

In progress

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither has any amazing feature you’ve seen on any website, ours included. Our team is currently hard at work on improving sales dashboards to better help the internal team work and collaborate around filling jobs more efficiently.
